Our story

Started by one mum.
Built by 400 of us.

In 2021, Tenille Noya started a small WhatsApp group with just 10 mums in the Alicante area — sharing contacts, tips, and honest recommendations to help each other settle in and thrive in Spain.

Word spread. Mums joined, shared their trusted contacts, and helped each other navigate everything from NIE appointments to finding the best nursery. That group has now grown into a community of over 400 active mums across Alicante, San Juan, El Campello, and Mutxamel.

This page is the digital home of that community. Every recommendation here is 100% human — shared by real mums who have personally used the service, school, doctor, or tradesperson. No AI. No sponsored listings. No anonymous reviews. Just real people helping real people.

Start ticking off steps as you complete them ✨
Choose and apply for your Spanish visa via a qualified lawyer
Main options: DNV (Digital Nomad Visa) — for remote workers earning from outside Spain, must earn 200%+ of minimum wage. NLV (Non-Lucrative Visa) — for those with passive income/savings, cannot work in Spain. Autónomo visa — self-employment. EU citizenship / family reunification — if applicable. A lawyer handles paperwork, translations, and appointments and is strongly recommended.
💼 Visa & Legal
Take out private health insurance (required for most visa applications)
Spain requires proof of full health coverage for most long-stay visas. Recommended options: Sanitas, Asisa, Adeslas (Asistencia Sanitaria), AXA Spain, DKV. Check our Mums group recommendations above for local brokers — Aura Modoran (seguros) and Manon from Nationale Nederlanden are both in the group. Must cover hospitalisation, GP, and repatriation.
🏥 Health Insurance
Clarify with your lawyer — is the NIE included in their fee?
Most visa lawyers include NIE (Número de Identidad de Extranjero) in their package as it is required for the visa process. If not, there is a separate process with additional fees and appointments. Confirm this in writing before paying. The NIE is your tax identification number — essential for everything in Spain.
📋 Admin
Arrange temporary accommodation for arrival
You'll need an address in Spain for most applications. Short-term rental, Airbnb, or a friend's address is acceptable initially. Avoid signing a long-term lease until you've explored the area. San Juan Playa, El Campello, Mutxamel and Albufereta are popular family areas. See Mums group property recommendations above.
🏠 Housing
Open a Spanish bank account or set up Wise / Revolut
You'll need a local bank account for paying rent, utilities and taxes. Wise is recommended by the group for international transfers (USD/GBP to EUR). For a Spanish bank, Sabadell, BBVA and CaixaBank all offer accounts for new residents. Note: some banks require NIE first.
💶 Finance
Collect your TIE (Tarjeta de Identidad de Extranjero) once visa is approved
After your visa is approved, you must visit Spain and apply for your TIE — this is your physical residency card (green card). This requires a biometric appointment at the Comisaría de Policía Nacional. Your lawyer usually arranges this. The TIE replaces the original NIE document as your daily ID.
📋 Admin
Book your Empadronamiento (Padron) appointment — do this immediately
The Padron is the municipal register — you declare that you live in this area. This is one of the most important steps and unlocks access to public services, schools, and healthcare. Appointments can take 6–8 weeks to get so book the moment you arrive. Go to your local Ayuntamiento (Town Hall) or book online. In San Juan Playa, appointments are at Alicante city hall. In San Juan Pueblo, go to Sant Joan d'Alacant OMAC. Bring: NIE/TIE, passport, proof of address (rental contract + utility bill).
🏛️ Municipal — Book immediately
Find permanent accommodation (after NIE received)
With your NIE in hand you can sign a proper long-term rental contract. Landlords require NIE for the contract. Average long-term rent in San Juan / Albufereta area: €900–€1,600/month for a 2–3 bedroom flat. Use Idealista, Fotocasa, or local estate agents. Sandra Campillo (in the Mums group) can help with rentals.
🏠 Housing
Register with a local GP (Centro de Salud) once Padron is complete
Once you have your Padron certificate, register at your local Centro de Salud for a SIP card (your Spanish health card). This gives access to public healthcare. For children, request a separate SIP card for them immediately — a temporary card is usually issued straight away.
🏥 Public Health
Get a Spanish SIM card / local phone number
You'll need a local number for all official appointments, school, and day-to-day life. Options: Orange, Vodafone, Movistar (major networks), Yoigo, Pepephone (cheaper). For short stays use the Airalo app (eSIM). Most require NIE and passport to sign up.
📱 Practical
Register as Autónomo (self-employed) if applicable
If you are self-employed, register with the RETA (Régimen Especial de Trabajadores Autónomos) via the Seguridad Social. Once registered as autónomo, you are covered by Spain's public health system — so you may be able to move away from private insurance. Note: autónomo registration requires your NIE and Padron. Your gestor handles this for you. Monthly social security contribution for autónomos starts at approximately €230/month (2026 flat rate for new starters).
💼 Self-Employment
Find a gestor (tax adviser / accountant) — write their name below
A gestor (gestoría) is a uniquely Spanish type of administrative professional who handles tax filings, business registrations, payroll, and official bureaucracy. Every expat needs one. They file your IRPF (income tax declaration) each April–June, manage autónomo quarterly tax returns (Modelo 130, 303, 390), and can handle most official admin. Highly recommended from the Mums group: Hector at Vidal Gestors (+34 623 99 41 39), Gabriel Abogados, and Expat's Consulting Agency (Athina & Fiona) at The Garden Room every second Friday.
💶 Taxes & Admin
Apply for Cl@ve PIN (digital ID for online government services)
Cl@ve is Spain's digital identity system — you need it to book NIE/TIE appointments online, access tax records, and manage official documents remotely. Register in person at the Subdelegación del Gobierno in Alicante (no appointment needed, walk in with NIE + passport). Once registered, you can do most government admin from home.
📋 Digital Identity
Enrol children in school (applications open in April–May for September start)
Public school registration in Spain uses the Adminova online system (Valencian Community). Apply in April–May for September. You need: NIE, Padron certificate, proof of address (NIE + factura or rental agreement). Provisional placement results released late May. Document submission at the assigned school: 25 June – 2 July. Popular public schools near San Juan: CEIP La Albufereta, Condomina. Private/international: European School Alicante, Costa Blanca school.
🏫 Schools
Exchange your driving licence for a Spanish one
Non-EU licences must be exchanged within 6 months of registering as a resident (sometimes 2 years depending on agreement). Book via DGT (Dirección General de Tráfico). You'll need a psicotécnico test (vision and reaction test at a recognised centre — very quick, about €40). The group recommends using a gestoría like Sonia Vaello Garcia (gestoriavaello.com) to manage the process. Note: if your psicotécnico expires before your DGT appointment, it's usually still accepted as long as it was valid when submitted.
🚗 Driving
Set up utilities in your name (electricity, water, internet, gas)
Ask your landlord or estate agent to assist with transfers. You'll need your NIE and IBAN. Main providers: Iberdrola / Endesa / Naturgy (electricity). Aguas de Alicante (water, automatic for the area). Movistar / Orange / Vodafone (internet). For gas: bottle (bombona) is common in flats — see Mums group tips on gas bottle registration at petrol stations. NB: having utility bills in your name at your address is required for future school applications and document renewals.
🏠 Home Setup
File your first Spanish tax declaration (IRPF) with your gestor
If you became resident before 31 December, you are tax resident in Spain for that year and must file an IRPF return the following April–June. Your gestor files this for you. Spain also applies a wealth tax (Patrimonio) for assets over €700,000. If you moved under the Beckham Law (special expat tax regime — flat 24% for first 6 years), your gestor must apply for this separately within 6 months of arriving. Inform your gestor about all worldwide income sources.
💶 Tax — Important
Register children with a paediatrician at your Centro de Salud
Once your children have SIP cards, register them with a paediatrician (pediatra) at your local health centre. Spain has an excellent public paediatric system. All standard vaccines are free and administered at the health centre on schedule. If you prefer private paediatrics, Vithas and Quirón have English-speaking paediatric departments.
👶 Children's Health
Get a Certificado Digital (digital certificate) for online admin
The digital certificate (from FNMT) is more powerful than Cl@ve — it lets you sign documents digitally, access the full Sede Electrónica, file taxes, and manage everything online. Free to obtain. Walk-in to the Subdelegación del Gobierno or AEAT (Tax Office) in Alicante with your NIE and passport. No appointment needed at the San Juan OMAC. Once downloaded to your browser, most Spanish bureaucracy can be done from home.
💻 Digital Admin
Renew your TIE before it expires (initial TIE is usually 1 year)
Your first TIE is typically valid for 1 year. You must renew before it expires — apply 1–2 months before the expiry date to avoid gaps. After continuous residence, you can apply for a long-term / permanent residency (5 years = long-term; 10 years = permanent). Your gestor or lawyer handles renewals. The Mums group recommends Hector at Vidal Gestors for TIE renewals.
📋 Residency Renewal
Start Spanish language classes
Even basic Spanish transforms daily life — school communication, medical appointments, and local friendships all become easier. Free government options: Escuela Oficial de Idiomas Alicante (register in September). Free adult classes in Mutxamel at IES L'Allusser (A0–B1). Private: Blink Academy (all levels, runs through summer). Language Exchange at The Garden Room (El Campello) is free and social.
🌍 Language
Register your home contents and set up home insurance
Home insurance (seguro de hogar) is required by most landlords. It covers building (usually landlord's responsibility) and contents (your responsibility). Also check: if you have valuables, vehicles, or run a business from home, make sure they are separately covered. Group broker Aura Modoran (seguros) can advise.
🏠 Insurance
Join local parent / expat community groups
You're already on the right track! The Mums of Alicante WhatsApp group is one of the most valuable resources in the area — request to join via a current member. Also useful: LinkedIn Local Alicante (monthly networking), The Garden Room (El Campello) for community events, and the Mums Night Out dinners (see Events section above).

Get a will drawn up in Spain (strongly recommended for residents)
If you own property or have assets in Spain, a Spanish will (testamento) drafted by a Spanish notary is strongly recommended. Without one, Spanish inheritance law applies — which may not match your wishes and can be complex for international families. Cost: approximately €60–€200 via a notary. Your lawyer or gestor can advise.
